Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists
The Revolutionary Socialists declare their full solidarity with journalists on this protest day, Wednesday, June 10, in their struggle against state tyranny, its crackdown on freedoms, and the unchecked dominance of capital in public and private media institutions.
They affirm their commitment to standing alongside journalists in their battle for fair wages, opposing arbitrary dismissals, ensuring union protection for all media professionals, and rejecting the imprisonment of journalists. They also support the fight for legislative reforms that safeguard journalists and protect press freedom.
Today’s journalist protests coincide with the anniversary of their 1995 victory in the battle to overturn Law No. 93 of 1995, which was widely known as the “Law for the Assassination of Press Freedom and the Protection of Corruption.” Through their struggle, backed by political and human rights forces, journalists forced the ousted Mubarak to withdraw the law.
Today, history repeats itself. The state’s increasing authoritarianism, its crackdown on freedoms and journalists’ rights, and its attempts to impose a singular media narrative require the unity and collective efforts of all democratic forces. This is not merely a battle for journalists alone but for everyone who defends freedom of opinion and expression and struggles for real change.
