Israel Continues Genocide in Gaza

On February 16, the German news agency Tagesschau published an article entitled “Egypt is reportedly planning a large refugee camp.”

The Tagesschau reports that Egypt is “now building a reception camp in the desert near the border [with Gaza] on an area of 20 square kilometers that could accommodate more than 100,000 people.”

And further: “According to the newspaper report, Egypt has even threatened to terminate its peace treaty with Israel if there is an Israeli offensive on Rafah and a subsequent influx of refugees.”

There are currently 1.3 million Palestinians in Rafah who have been displaced by Israel’s bombing since October. What the Tagesschau article does not mention is that since October 2023 (and before), representatives of the Israeli government have continuously expressed genocidal intentions in Gaza. “We are fighting human animals,” said the Israeli Defense Minister on October 10th. Tagesschau also withholds one key aspect and that is the goal of the colonial state of Israel is the complete ethnic cleansing and expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza.

Since October 2023, Israel has murdered over 30,000 Palestinians. As early as December 2023, 70% of all houses in Gaza were destroyed and the entire medical infrastructure was ruined. The fact that this is a genocide is consistently denied by the German state and its media apparatus.

On February 23rd, a group of lawyers stated that they were bringing the German federal government to court for aiding and abetting the genocide in Gaza. Not a single representative of a major German media company was present at the lawyers’ press conference. This shows how systematically every voice that discusses what is happening in Gaza and the German federal government is complicit, is being silenced.

In the same week,  the CDU and SPD government in Berlin stated that a brochure under the title “Myth#Israel1948” shall be brought into use in Berlin schools. Said broschure claims that Israel did not expel 750,000 Palestinians in 1948 and that the Nakba was a campaign by “the Arabs”. It is considered “anti-Semitic” to say that Israel occupies the Palestinian territories.

Through this brochure, the Berlin government promotes colonial-racist narratives and Zionist propaganda. This is the tip of the iceberg of the repressions and criminalization of the Palestine solidarity movement that has been going on for months, not only in Berlin but throughout Germany.

The unity of the solidarity movement must now be the focus to act together against these ongoing repressions and criminalization. It must be the duty of all anti-racists and internationalists to join forces at this moment to fight against “their own ruling class.” The weakening of the ruling classes in the West means a weakening of its support for Zionist settler colonialism in Palestine.
