In Solidarity with Hisham Kassem Against Security Repression

Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists

The Revolutionary Socialists Movement expresses its full solidarity with the publisher “Hisham Kassem” and demands his immediate release. The movement asserts that today’s verdict, sentencing Kassem to 6 months in prison and a 20,000-pound fine in a swift trial over just three sessions, is nothing but a punitive action against him for his opposition views. It serves to reaffirm the regime’s ongoing policies of silencing dissent and stifling the public sphere to ensure the upcoming elections proceed without any disturbance.

The verdict against Kassem concerns two incidents. The first involves a complaint filed by former Minister of Manpower Kamal Abu Eita, accusing Kassem of defamation. Abu Eita’s complaint comes at a time when the opposition desperately needs to unify against Sisi’s regime.

The second incident in Kassem’s case relates to allegations of insulting officers and police officials at the Sayeda Zeinab police station. This clearly signals the targeting and punishment of Kassem. Police stations, which routinely kill and practice systematic torture against people, feel insulted by a detainee under their control and thus file a complaint against him. The authorities seem to have outdone themselves in fabricating a case against Kassem.

The Revolutionary Socialists Movement calls for releasing all detainees, foremost among them the publisher and Secretary-General of the Free Current, immediately and unconditionally. They also call for ending the security campaign targeting the opposition before the presidential elections.
