Essam El-Erian: Another Death in the Prisons of Death

Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists

Continuing the grim toll in the prisons where people are left to die, Dr. Essam El-Erian passed away today in Scorpion Prison.

No matter what the official statements offer as explanations for the death, as they have tried in previous cases, the confirmed and apparent cause of death in these prisons is designed for slow execution beyond any semblance of justice.

Essam El-Erian, who received no treatment for his hepatitis and had been denied visits since 2013, is like tens of thousands of other prisoners from various political backgrounds. They have suffered for years under harsh prison conditions, recently exacerbated by the ban on visits due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the deteriorating health of the elderly, which is inevitable under these conditions where the regime abuses the detainees, making death a certainty.

The death of Essam El-Erian is not the first and will not be the last in the prisons notorious for suspicious deaths that have turned into black boxes swallowing those the regime throws into them, only to spit them out as lifeless bodies after a while.

We demand freedom for all and the release of all prisoners of conscience, all pretrial detainees, and all elderly and chronically ill prisoners. We also call for the opening of prisons to inspections by civil institutions and severe investigations into all prisoner deaths.

Medical neglect is a crime.
Freedom for all detainees.
