March 15, 2020Suspending Classes is Not Enough

Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists
We believe that the presidential decision issued on Saturday evening to suspend classes must prioritize the conditions of working Egyptian families to be effective. The burden of this decision should not fall on the working families who are already struggling financially to meet their needs amidst the rising cost of living.
The decision places millions of working families in a difficult situation. Caring for children during this period necessitates that one parent be fully available, which means that a decision to suspend classes necessitates other decisions. These should include flexibility in working hours for parents, allowing for work from home whenever possible, and providing paid leave for one parent to take care of the children. This should be a commitment that also encompasses the private sector.
