We Are All Mada Masr

Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists

Just one day after security forces arrested Mada Masr editor Shady Zalat, they stormed the newsroom this afternoon, detaining the journalists inside.

The authorities’ full implications of this raid have yet to be revealed. However, the security policy pursued by the counter-revolutionary regime leaves no room for interpretation; the regime seeks to impose absolute silence by any means necessary.

Today, the journalists at Mada Masr are bravely paying the price for their courage and persistent refusal to conform to the regime. Their insistence on continuing their journalistic mission has made them a unique case, fighting with determination amidst a swamp of regime mouthpieces that have reached the lowest levels of degradation.

Today’s raid on Mada Masr by the security forces serves as evidence that the beacon illuminated by its journalists has successfully exposed the ugliness, lies, and deceit of the counter-revolutionary regime.

Today, we are all Mada Masr. We all reject the lies and ugliness of the regime, just as Mada Masr’s journalists have done. We all refuse to enter the filthy pen where an oppressive regime has confined journalistic entities whose only skill is writing reports for the security forces and taking orders from them.

The raid on Mada Masr today will not erase what the site has revealed about the regime’s ugliness and lies. For those who still doubt the credibility of what Mada Masr has published, especially the recent investigation about the dictator’s son’s exile to Russia, today’s raid provides definitive proof. The regime of falsification fights only the truth.

Standing with Mada Masr today in every possible way is a defense of the last stronghold of independent journalism, which Sisi has reduced to mere bulletins supervised by commissioned officers, just as he turned the syndicate into an office run by his employees.
