The Counterrevolution Paves the Way for Constitutional Change with More Arrests

Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists

The Revolutionary Socialists Movement announces its solidarity with the Eid detainees: Maasoum Marzouk, Raed Salama, Yahya al-Qazzaz, Nermin Hussein, Sameh Saoudi, Abdel Fattah Saeed, and Amr Mohamed. These individuals have recently joined the list of counterrevolutionary prisoners. As usual, state apparatuses have leveled absurd charges against them, clearly revealing the deliberate intention of the counterrevolutionary authorities to suppress any attempt to express the deterioration of Egyptians’ conditions on all fronts.

The Revolutionary Socialists Movement views the targeting of the Eid detainees as part of a systematic and organized policy pursued by the counterrevolutionary authority to eliminate any opportunity for opposition. The movement asserts that the continuous targeting of any initiative or dissenting voices against the regime is subject to security repression and prosecution.

Since Sisi ascended to the presidency, the state has not hesitated to close all fields of political activity and silence all opposing voices. This applies whether they belong to the revolution or are affiliated with the state.

While the Revolutionary Socialists Movement calls on all struggling forces to show solidarity with the Eid detainees, it emphasizes that these events are neither the first nor the last. As long as the ranks of the revolutionary forces do not unite to face this ongoing wave against opposition voices and any political activity that does not align with state policy, these events will continue. We must recognize that the Eid arrests campaign continues the state’s approach. This began with the closure of the Strong Egypt Party and the arrest of its leader and deputy, continuing the state’s practices against anyone involved in politics in Egypt. Moreover, it blatantly violates the most basic principles of freedom and democracy.

It has become evident to all that the counterrevolutionary authority, in its quest to amend the constitution to crown the dictator as Egypt’s eternal ruler, will not hesitate to crush any attempt to raise an opposition voice. The struggling forces, united by the revolution before being divided by the counterrevolution, must unite today to confront this bleak scenario. The revolutionary troops managed to unite against the counterrevolutionary authority in the face of the sale of the islands of Tiran and Sanafir. They courageously fought an honorable battle against this deal. Today, the unity and cohesion of the struggling opposition front must be restored to confront the scenario coming to fruition, starting with an arrest campaign that will spare no one.

The opposition forces have learned since 2013 that no one will enjoy freedom until all enjoy it.
