January 20, 2018Through Endorsements and Protests, We Confront Price Hikes

Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists
Sisi didn’t wait for the elections to end before announcing another hike in train ticket prices. This increase is just the start of another wave of rising costs for all goods and services. It’s a blow to wage earners and millions of unemployed people struggling daily to make ends meet, not to mention paying for healthcare, education, and other essential services.
This blatant favoritism toward ruthless capitalism shows a deep-seated hostility toward wage earners. Yes, they’re squeezing every drop out of us to satisfy global capitalism and financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund. Yes, they’ll keep cutting our wages, and if we dare to speak up, they’ll unleash their media and security forces against us.
When the regime’s leader says that social justice “brings down nations,” it’s clear he has no regard for the Egyptian people after imprisoning tens of thousands, displacing labor leaders, and seizing public spaces.
The dictatorial regime feeds on our weakness, despair, and disunity. So let’s send a different message: let’s resist in our workplaces and demand wage increases. Let’s stand up to their policies by gathering endorsements for Khaled Ali, a potential presidential candidate who stands with workers and farmers.
Let’s join Khaled Ali in demanding a higher minimum wage, linking wages to prices, restoring subsidies, and funding the state through progressive taxes and taxes on profits and the stock market.
We are not a poor country; new gas fields and other resources are discovered daily. But the ruling capitalist class only sees its own interests, as shown by the continuous growth of their wealth while our wages plummet.
So once again, go out and endorse Khaled Ali, and fight for your rightful wages at work. Resist austerity and repression, just as the people are doing in Tunisia, Sudan, Morocco, and Iran. That’s how we’ll claim our right to life.
Resistance is the solution.
