Joint Statement: 8 Parties and Movements and More than 100 Individuals Announce Their Solidarity with Alexandria’s Prisoners of Conscience and the Defendants of the (December 30) Trials

Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists

In the final hours of the year, Alexandria courts are set to review two cases as part of a series of incidents, rulings, and trials that have placed Egypt at the top of negative rankings concerning freedom of speech and the repression of society across various groups, including journalists, lawyers, and even those who have no relation to or opinion on public affairs.
In the case publicly known as the “Academy Case,” the judge exercised his legal right to detain human rights lawyer Mahienour El-Massry, recipient of the Ludovic Trarieux International Human Rights Prize, along with unionist and member of the Bread and Freedom Party, Moatasem Medhat, during the session on November 18, until the verdict on December 30. Five defendants are involved, including lawyer and coordinator of the Constitution Party in Alexandria, Walid El-Amary, and human rights lawyer Asmaa Naim. Both defendants in another case are to be reviewed on the same day. Additionally, the Bread and Freedom Party (under establishment) coordinator in Alexandria, Ziad Abou Fadel, was detained, despite all attending voluntarily, without arrest warrants or even a summons from the prosecution. The case lacks strong evidence, witnesses, or proof—just a contradictory police investigation report.
In the case known as the “Court Case,” involving seven Alexandria lawyers, although they were acquitted in an opposition session after lawyer Mohamed Ramadan was sentenced in person, and the others in absentia, to a fine of 50,000 EGP, the prosecution hastened to appeal the acquittal, scheduling the session for December 30.
To prevent December 30 from becoming another date for undermining justice and confirming the authorities’ determination to weaken state institutions and use them to close and monopolize public space, we call on all honorable citizens to sign and show their solidarity and encourage others to join in opposing the blatant disregard for the basic principles of justice and the foundations of a modern state by signing this statement.
