June 8, 2017Joint Statement: Tiran and Sanafir Are Egyptian

Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists
The undersigned express their firm commitment to opposing the Parliament’s discussion of the maritime border demarcation agreement with Saudi Arabia by all peaceful political and constitutional means. This agreement constitutes an assault on the constitution and the law, disregards judicial rulings, and represents an unprecedented encroachment of executive power over all institutions.
The signatories affirm that this agreement, which, for the first time in Egypt’s history, entails the ceding of Egyptian land, poses a clear challenge to the will of the Egyptian people, the facts of history and geography, and the sacrifices and blood of the martyrs who defended the land. It also undermines the rights of future generations.
The political parties, groups, and individuals who have signed this statement reiterate their unequivocal rejection of the Parliament’s discussion of this void and nullified agreement, invalidated by final judicial rulings. They warn that persisting in passing the agreement and handing over the islands would be a crime for which all those involved in supporting or discussing it will be held accountable. The signatories call on members of Parliament to shoulder their national responsibility, resist the pressures exerted on them, and declare their complete refusal to discuss or pass this agreement in any form.
The signatories call upon the Egyptian people to express their rejection of the agreement and the attempts to pass it by all peaceful means of expression, starting by raising Egyptian flags and banners stating “Tiran and Sanafir Are Egyptian” on balconies and continuing by participating in all activities opposing the agreement until it is overturned. This includes participating in the popular signature campaign launched by the “Egypt Is Not for Sale” movement and submitting these signatures to members of Parliament in their constituencies to compel them to express the will of the people by rejecting the agreement’s discussion.
The political parties, groups, and individuals signing this statement hold the Parliament and the executive authority, represented by the presidency and the government, fully responsible for persisting with this crime against the nation and the Egyptian people. They call upon all forces, unions, organizations, and the Egyptian masses to do everything possible to prevent the agreement’s passing. Additionally, they renewed their demand for the immediate release of all young members of civil forces who fought to defend the land in the face of a government that, in an unprecedented stance for any nation, astonishingly fought to relinquish it.
In this context, the signatories announce the start of a peaceful, rotating sit-in at party headquarters in all Egyptian governorates under the slogan “Tiran and Sanafir Are Egyptian Weeks,” which will include various protest and political activities. The signatories confirm that they are in continuous session and consultation to monitor developments and will announce further escalatory steps in response to the Parliament’s persistence in passing this void agreement. You are invited to attend their press conference next Sunday, where they will announce details of these actions.
As we continue this struggle, which began over a year ago and during which the Egyptian people, with all their active forces, have achieved successive victories by nullifying the agreement and halting the scenario of relinquishing the land, we reaffirm our confidence in the ability of the Egyptian people and their national forces to complete this victory, culminating in the total nullification of the agreement. The signatories stress that the ceding of Egyptian land, in violation of the constitution, is an explicit declaration of the collapse of the legitimacy of the current government and Parliament. This is a battle we all must fight to its conclusion.
