May 26, 2017The dictator wants only his voice to be heard… but ideas never die.

Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists
In a move comparable only to the most oppressive regimes, Sisi’s government has assumed the mantle of North Korea’s dictatorship and decided to block 21 news websites.
Since the military coup that overthrew the January Revolution in mid-2013, Sisi has discarded the very constitution he and his allies drafted—a constitution that prohibits the confiscation of newspapers and opinions—treating it like garbage. He has also targeted Egyptian newspapers published within Egypt and officially licensed by the Supreme Council for the Press.
Because he lives in a military bubble, Sisi fails to understand that ideas have wings and will inevitably reach those passionate about knowledge and yearn for a society where diverse opinions can thrive.
This step, which fits perfectly with Sisi’s way of ruling, is inseparable from his broader campaign to repress political and social forces.
A move like this will only rally thousands against him—if not today, then tomorrow.
However, at this moment, all political and social forces must prioritize the issue of press freedom on their agendas.
The active members within the Journalists’ Syndicate, especially after the state’s takeover of its council, must also place journalists’ professional and financial well-being at the forefront, as many have lost their livelihoods due to these actions.
We are not North Korea, and we never will be. Independent media will continue to carry the voice of the people, angry at policies of poverty and tyranny, from every street and neighborhood.
No political force that has struggled under military rule has ever failed to get its message across to the people.
