May 12, 2017Statement from the Revolutionary Socialist Students: Freedom for Gamal Abdel Hakim

Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists
On the evening of Friday, May 12, the Zagazig Public Prosecutor ordered the detention of our comrade Gamal Abdel Hakim, a student at the Faculty of Commerce at Zagazig University and a member of the under-formation Bread and Freedom Party, for four days in pre-trial detention. He is accused of using social media to promote the ideas of a terrorist organization in writing and speech. Earlier that morning, security forces raided his home and arrested him at dawn.
Gamal’s arrest, fabricated charges, and detention are part of the regime’s ongoing campaign of persecution and repression against all who oppose it. His outspoken criticism of the regime’s policies and his involvement in student activism are the real reasons for his detention, prompting the authorities to file false accusations against him. As usual, these charges fall under the regime’s familiar pretext of “terrorism,” its preferred justification for imprisoning political opponents.
We, the Revolutionary Socialist Students, declare our unwavering solidarity with Gamal and categorically reject his detention, demanding his immediate release. We call on all student groups, movements, and political parties to join us in opposing his detention and demanding his release.
