January 15, 2017Final Statement of the First Conference of the “We Want to Live” Campaign (The Popular Campaign to Confront Impoverishment Policies)

Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists
After the founding conference for the “We Want to Live” campaign, the assembled social and political forces affirmed their commitment to work together to confront the fierce and unprecedented assault on the living conditions of the working class. This assault has turned life into a living hell for millions. They stress that the current policies—laws and decrees that strip hard-working people of their basic rights, such as the right to a living wage, stable housing, and adequate healthcare—are not an unavoidable fate. Instead, they result from the regime’s alignment with wealthy businesspeople. These policies could only be imposed through the regime’s brutal crackdown on worker protests, the criminalization of labor activism, and the repression of independent unions through laws designed to restore the state-controlled union as the sole representative of workers.
The participants believe resisting this onslaught of savage capitalism requires immediately establishing grassroots “We Want to Live” campaign committees across different governorates, labor unions, and universities. These committees will amplify workers’ voices, support their protests, and help shape their demands, ultimately working to develop natural alternatives to the regime’s exploitative policies.
The attendees also declare their rejection of the sale of Egyptian islands to Saudi Arabia as part of arrangements with the Israeli enemy, a move that is inseparable from the aggressive privatization agenda that has returned with full force, bringing destruction, displacement of millions of workers, and the shutdown of hundreds of factories.
Together, we struggle for fair wages, comprehensive social security, free unions, and the right to work, housing, and healthcare for all who labor. The united masses are undefeatable. Therefore, we have agreed to work on several key priorities to fulfill the objectives outlined in the campaign’s founding statement:
1. Fight for higher wages, increased social insurance pensions, and expanded social protections to
cover informal and precarious workers.
2. Secure union freedoms and protect the right to organize.
3. Ensure access to affordable medication for all citizens.
4. Provide necessary resources for farmers and fishermen and protect their social and economic rights, particularly health and social insurance.
5. Stand in solidarity with labor movements and support workers who have been dismissed or are facing persecution by security forces. The campaign will begin by launching an international solidarity initiative for IFCO workers, calling for a boycott of the owners’ products.
6. Enforce constitutional rights to healthcare, education, and scientific research.
Together, because our lives depend on it.
