Statement by Nubian Organizations and Associations in Alexandria From the Nubian community in Alexandria: young and old, men and women

Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists

Today, Monday, November 21, during an emergency meeting, we express our strong condemnation of the injustices faced by Egyptian Nubians. These injustices include being denied their constitutional right to freedom of movement, as guaranteed by Article 62 of the Egyptian Constitution, and being blocked from accessing food and water while traveling to participate in a peaceful march toward their ancestral lands south of the Aswan High Dam.

For decades, the Nubian community has called for the right to return, resettlement, and fair compensation for the repeated displacements we have endured. We have shown patience and understanding of the challenges our country is facing. However, recent decisions to sell Nubian lands through public auctions to non-Nubians represent a grave violation of our rights. In response, we organized peaceful and dignified marches, carrying drums and singing to express our cultural identity. Yet, these peaceful actions were met with hostility and weapons drawn against us.

Regrettably, security forces prevented our peaceful march from reaching the lands of Toshka and Forkundi.
In light of these events, we have resolved to take the following actions:

1. Stand in full solidarity with our brothers and sisters participating in the Nubian return convoy.
2. Demand that authorities allow the protesters to move freely provide them with essential food and water, and ensure their safety and security. We hold all concerned authorities fully accountable for any harm to the protesters.
3. Call for an immediate and transparent investigation into the use of live ammunition against Nubians, with the findings shared openly with the Egyptian public.
4. Urge the President to issue a decree guaranteeing Nubians their right to return to their ancestral lands, in line with Article 236 of the 2014 Egyptian Constitution.
5. Insist that all Nubian lands be excluded from current or future investment projects.
6. Request a review and amendment of Resolution No. 444 of 2014 to ensure it does not infringe on Nubians’ right to return to their lands.
7. Propose two draft laws during this legislative session: one ensuring the right of Nubians to return to their lands and another establishing a high commission for the development of the Nubian Lake region.
8. Reserve the right to organize additional convoys to the south if urgent solutions are not reached for the protesters within 48 hours of this statement. All necessary precautions will be taken to address any potential challenges.
Additionally, we have submitted a request for permits to organize a peaceful protest in Alexandria to stand in solidarity with our family members protesting in the south.
Nubia is the heart of Egypt… a treasure of history and cultural heritage.
