Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists

Standing Together with Doctors, Journalists, and Public Transport Workers: We Will Not Fear Your Corruption or Bow to Your Power.

Corrupt officials and oppressors believe that imprisoning Yahya Qallash, President of the Journalists’ Syndicate, along with board members Gamal Abdel Rahim and Khaled El-Balshy, will serve as a warning—an attempt to scare Egyptians into silence and prevent them from speaking truth to power. They imagine this will bring an end to journalists’ fight for a free press that exposes corruption and stands by the people in their pursuit of freedom and justice.

They also think that targeting Dr. Mona Mina, Deputy Head of the Doctors’ Syndicate, through an intense smear campaign will silence her efforts to expose the grim reality faced by millions of Egyptians who lack access to adequate healthcare in public hospitals. They believe such measures will force people to accept the daily humiliation they endure in the streets, hospitals, schools, police stations, and beyond.
Moreover, they expect that the ongoing imprisonment of public transport workers’ leaders under charges of “intent to strike”—simply for resisting privatization plans and advocating for affordable, humane transportation for the public and their colleagues’ rights—will stifle the labor movement and suppress protests against the skyrocketing costs driven by IMF policies.

But we, the millions of Egyptians living in alleyways, streets, fields, factories, mosques, and churches—whether in Upper Egypt, the Delta, or Sinai—are deprived of our basic rights to information, healthcare, education, employment, and affordable public transportation. We stand united with these honorable individuals and their unions, extending our deepest respect, gratitude, and appreciation.
We urge all unions to follow the lead of the Journalists’ Syndicate and the Doctors’ Syndicate by standing against corruption and injustice. Now is the time to coordinate and work collectively within a unified front. This is one battle, and we face one common adversary.

We, the undersigned, believe that building Egypt’s future—a nation where freedom and justice prevail—can only be achieved through the efforts of these independent, honorable unions, alongside the active participation of all vital forces in society.

We reject the politically motivated judicial actions and unconstitutional laws targeting the Journalists’ Syndicate president and board members. We also stand firmly with Dr. Mona Mina, Deputy Head of the Doctors’ Syndicate, and demand the immediate release of the public transport workers.
