No to the Regime’s Strong-Arm Tactics… No to the Civil Service Law

Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists

The government serving the interests of big businessmen continues to pay employees’ salaries based on Law 18, despite its annulment by Parliament’s first decision on February 18. This decision mandated the reinstatement of Law 47 of 1978, effective February 29, in blatant violation of Article 156 of the Constitution.

Sisi’s regime proves to us daily that it does not recognize the Constitution, the law, or even Parliament. It follows only the orders of major businessmen and the dictates of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, which have conditioned loans on slashing the number of public sector employees to less than one-third of the workforce. These loans are not used to improve healthcare, free education, or solve the housing crisis for young people; instead, they serve only to make the rich richer and the poor poorer.
Sisi himself publicly admitted this on television when he declared that he wants only one million employees out of the seven million currently working in Egypt. This means forcing more than six million workers and their families into destitution—a plan that is now being put into action through the government’s renewed push to pass the law once again through Parliament.

For this reason, the Revolutionary Socialists declare their full support for the employees’ protest scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday. Demonstrations, sit-ins, and strikes are the only means by which the people can force a regime that raises prices, engages in state terror, and detains tens of thousands to retreat.

Together, we stand against the regime’s assault on the livelihoods of the working classes. Together, we fight for an alternative policy that prioritizes workers over profits.
