Statement of the Revolutionary Socialist Students – Port Said University: The Administration of the Faculty of Science at Port Said University Is Acting Oppressively Toward Students

Statement by the Revolutionary Socialists

Following the suspension of the Student Union members at the Faculty of Science, after they were accused and formal complaints were filed against them for theft, embezzling funds allocated for student activities, and profiteering from certain events—allegations which the Union categorically denied in its official statement—a series of oppressive measures have been enacted against students, based on unjust and harsh regulations.

We, the Revolutionary Socialist Students, find it necessary to expose the injustice inflicted upon the students of the faculty after the new Dean assumed his position, displaying excessive rigidity and severity.

However, these measures are not intended to resolve the problems facing the Faculty of Science but rather to make students’ presence at the faculty more difficult. We were surprised to find that the results of the first semester had been withheld from the university’s website due to unpaid tuition fees despite the academic year not yet being over. This forced many students to pay fees to view their results and register for second-semester courses. The administration appears solely focused on extracting money from students, neglecting even once to ensure the safety and security standards the faculty and its students lack. Without exaggeration, students are exposed to risks of infertility, cancer, and respiratory diseases due to their handling of hazardous materials at the Faculty of Science, all without any available safety or protection measures.

The regulations for student housing serve as the final chapter in this absurd scene; many non-resident students will be denied the opportunity to reside in university dormitories starting next year if they fail three or more courses.

From the perspective of university officials, it appears that the university is no longer for its students. Today, Port Said University turns a deaf ear, just as it previously did when its students were arrested and abducted, whether from the streets or their homes. Today, Ahmed Abdo, a student at the Faculty of Engineering, is absent from the university after being arrested from his home just a few days ago.
Ahmed is not the first, nor will he be the last. We reject the university’s treatment of these students as criminals, as we are fully aware of the political motivations behind their arrests. In this, the university plays the role of punishing the student in addition to his imprisonment.

Several months ago, when one of our detained colleagues was released, the former Dean of the Faculty of Science ultimately refused to allow him to register for courses and join the semester under the pretext that the registration deadline had passed. Only after sustained pressure did the Dean reluctantly agree, as though he were granting a favor rather than restoring the student’s legitimate right.

We, the Revolutionary Socialist Students, affirm that the university has always been and will remain ours—the students’—even if all student groups are dissolved. Despite the ongoing harassment, we will continue to defend our rights and the rights of our fellow students, and we will never relinquish them.
