August 25, 2014Updated: Comrade Mahienour joins hunger strike
Comrade Mahienour el-Masry, currently serving a jail sentence in Damanhour Women’s Prison for breaking the repressive anti-protest law, began a hunger strike yesterday, 24 August, in solidarity with Alaa Abdel-Fattah and all other political prisoners jailed by the regime.
Alaa is among a number of political prisoners who have declared an open-ended hunger strike in recent days, protesting at harsh sentences and long periods of detention without trial.
Mahienour’s lawyer released a statement on Monday 25th August holding the prison authorities responsible for her well-being during the hunger strike.
Updated 26 August: Mahienour has ended her hunger strike out of consideration for the health of her cell mates who joined the strike in solidarity with her, as they are largely older women. She remains in complete solidarity with the other political prisoners who are on hunger strike.
